Transportation
Alexander City is a pivotal point for transportation. We are located only 78 miles southeast of Birmingham, 50 miles northeast of Montgomery, 123 miles southwest of Atlanta, and 70 miles northwest of Columbus, GA. US Highway 280 runs through Alexander City connecting cities from Birmingham to Savannah, GA, and interstate highways 85, 65, 20 and 59 are less than an hour away. Twelve motor freight carriers serve the city daily and interchange with other carriers throughout the United States, and ground freight delivery to the city is available on a daily basis. T.C. Russell Airport, Alexander City's municipal airport, is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, provides 5,417 feet of lighted runway 95 feet wide, and offers service to executive jet aircraft. The airport was the recent recipient of a federal grant that will begin the first in a series of construction projects around the airport.
Rail service is provided by Norfolk Southern Railroad. Alexander City is proud to boast a healthy business climate. Our local economy is based upon textile and apparel manufacturing, foundries, wood products, store fixtures, health services, and distribution. Aliant Bank, Wachovia Bank/Wells Fargo, Regions Bank, BB&T and Mutual Savings Credit Union, are extremely prosperous and supported by our community. |
